Well, that was sort of fun.
We have a very tasteful musical doorbell which has a memory chip which can be programmed with up to 8 sound clips. One of the settings allows you to cycle through the clips. For the last week it has been playing "Evil Laughter", which made it a little disappointing that we only got 2 sets of Trick or Treaters, and one of them didn't even ring the damn thing.
Anyway, now it's time to change it, so we have been scouring the MP3 collection and YooToob for November / Autumn songs.
This is what it is playing now (well, a suitable 5-10 seconds of each):
California Dreaming - Mamas and Papas Forever Autumn - Justin Hayward Autumnsong - Manic Street Preachers November Rain - Guns'n'Roses November Spawned a Monster - Morrissey Four Seasons/Autumn - Vivaldi November - Tom Waits Autumn in New York - Frank Sinatra

Driving back into the estate just now, a snowy owl perched on one of the fenceposts by the road. I pulled up right next to it (10 feet away maybe), but it flew away before M& could get a phone out of her bag.
I think that's the closest I've ever seen an owl in the wild.

Agail, courtesy of Mr Gaiman's Twitter, there is a lovely tribute to Philip Jose Farmer here.

Neil Gaiman's Twitter has told me that Philip Jose Farmer has died. Also here. The news doesn't seem to have made it to the Beeb yet.
This makes me sad, but at the risk of sounding flippant:
I wonder who he'll wake up next to?

The "Security Alert" you get from the Alliance & Leicester has an encoding of "Cyrillic"...

Weights and measures:
How much Ginger Beer, exactly, constitutes "lashings"?
I have 9 x 1 pint bottles, made according to Mrs. Beeton's recipe, and I'm wondering if that's enough...

Somewhat belatedly, I would like to wish a very happy and prosperous (as far as is possible in the current economic climate) 2009 to everyone.

Woke up at 6am (on account of it being a Weekday, see) and couldn't get back to sleep, so I got up and pottered around a little, played with my camera, prepared a plan for the Cooking Of Dinner, that kind of thing.
As a result, I'll reiterate yesterday's Seasons Greetings, with a couple of suitably festive images:
( Clicky here for festiveness )
The rest of the family are just now starting to stir.
Best wishes to everyone, and to everyone else too.

That's it.
I have finished work now (until Monday).
I'd like to wish a joyous and stress-free Non-Specific Midwinter Festival upon anyone who reads this, and all their friends and family too. And their dog.

Many thanks to the geek language scholars out there, who (maybe remarkably) all seem to be in agreement.
Particular thanks (I think) to glinda_w and uitlander for quoting Chapter and Verse from the MS Style Guide...
In case anyone was wondering, for some reason I seemed to be writing it a lot in emails today.
I habitually write "login" or "logon", but I know it's wrong because it falls apart when you try to turn it into a past tense.

Is it "logon to", "log onto", or indeed "log on to"?
Or, for that matter "login to", "log into", or "log in to"?
Answers on a postcard, please.

We are sat sitting here, at side-by-side his'n'hers computers, listening to the bloke on Radio 2 news telling us that UK adults are now spending more time than ever before on the Internet.
An average of 24 minutes per day...
/me pauses to listen for hysterical laughter.

Have just received notification from Maplins that my A3 laminator has been dispatched and that "Due to significantly increased demand, please allow between three and five working days for your delivery."
This was in my intray as I came back upstairs from testing my new A3 laminator, which arrived from Maplins this morning.
In other news, I appear to be drowning in paper.

Yes, the dress and everything got finished, pampering happened, and we have the evidence.
( Evidence under here )
Apparently she had a really good time, and is now round at a friend's with some Smirnoff Ice. We expect a call to pick her up sometime tomorrow morning-ish.

This morning, the sun is struggling out, and the sodden landscape steams gently. In places the mist thus created is so dense as to become downright eerie. Where actual sunlight breaks through, everything glistens and sparkles. I drove past a dead tree, which had the most spectacular spider's web in the fork of two branches, all picked out in water droplets. Sadly, I had neither camera, nor time to stop and dawdle.
I will miss this drive into work. Though the run up the Fosse Way is no less pleasant, just much longer.
That is all, thank you for listening.
